Thursday, April 17, in the early morning hours, Ogodo dies after a short illness. Amos Aketch confirmed the journalist’s death. In a mourning statement, Aketch mentioned that Ochieng’ Ogodo had recently fallen ill. However, the deceased remained in high spirits on Wednesday.
As per Aketch’s reports, the journalist suffered severe chest pain. This happened at around 2:00 am while resting at his home. The former journalist alerted his children, who responded swiftly. Thereafter, a cab arrived and rushed him to Mama Lucy Hospital. The deceased was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ogodo’s Excellence
Ogodo proved to be an accomplished journalist. He left a great impact on journalism, majorly on science and environmental matters. With his exceptional work, he received a Reuters-IUCN media award.
Furthermore, the deceased worked for 12 years as a Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Coordinator and news editor. Still, he served as a media and communications consultant in the UK-based Science and Development Network. He majored in his work on science, technology, and development in the Global South.
Additionally, Ogodo served as an executive board member for the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ). He held the role for six years (2017-2023). The Kenya Editors Guild sent out a message of condolence after the confirmation of Ogodo’s death.
“We at the Kenya Editors Guild are deeply saddened by the passing of Ochieng’ Ogodo, a long-standing member of our community and one of Kenya’s most accomplished science journalists and editors,” KEG mourned.
They further added, “Ochieng’ dedicated his life to telling stories that mattered, especially those that helped the public understand science, the environment, and developments in ways that were both accessible and impactful.”
Ogodo’s publications have been recognized globally in outlets like National Geographic, Nature Medicine, The Guardian (UK), and the British Medical Journal. Locally, Ogodo has been recognized for his excellence in writing for Standard Media Group.
