NTSA Issues Tough Measures to Counter Traffic Offences

More vehicle inspections shall be done by the government, through the Ministry of Transport. The government intends to establish more vehicle inspection centers in each county. The NTSA aims to curb road accidents across the country.

On Friday, April 11, the National Assembly Committee on Transport interviewed CS Davis Chirchir.  Cabinet Secretary Chirchir stated that the government intends to create partnerships with relevant dealers. This will see the ministry achieving the goal of establishing inspection centers.

During the committee, CS Chirchir said, “We will be opening up inspection space to all the major dealers who make the licensing requirement for inspection and provide equipment for inspection so that the licensing should be done in every county.”

The Director General George Njao of the National Transport and Safety Authority also attended the session. The director listened as CS Chirchir gave the recent updates on the rollout of digital cameras along major highways.

Additionally, CS Chirchir mentioned that the implementers of the previous camera installation did a great job. The strategic positions of the cameras ensure that lawbreakers can be tracked with ease. Chirchir told the committee the government has sufficient data since the piloting stage started. He emphasized that the plans for the second phase are underway.

“There are some digital cameras installed in some locations for testing. We have collected enough data, and we should be going into a second phase of institutionalizing and procuring some of these cameras, both fixed and mobile, so that we can improve the behavior on the roads,’’ Chirchir added.

In the meantime, Director Njao assured the committee that the pilot project remains underway. Therefore, the only allocation of sufficient budgetary resources. He believes that the measures will ensure the prevalent traffic offenses end.

He reported that the Authority had issued other new regulations to the Attorney General for a review. However, the approval process had stalled due to the constraints in the budgets.
