With the ongoing Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti, there are happenings worth knowing. A Kenyan police officer goes missing after a recent gang attack.
As per the statement from MSS, on Tuesday, March 2025, a Haitian National Police (HNP) armored vehicle got stuck in a ditch. This incident happened in the ditch along the Carrefour Paye-Savien Main Supply Route in the Pont-Sonde area.
What led to the Kenyan Police Office Missing
Later, two MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles went for a backup up for the recovery. Unexpectedly, one of the vehicles got stuck, and the other developed a mechanical issue.
The MSS spokesperson, Jack Ombaka, reports, “As the rescue teams attempted to resolve the situation, suspected gang members lying in wait launched an attack.” The statement clearly confesses that truly a Kenyan officer went unaccounted for. A suspected gang attacked, and the Kenyan team retaliated. After which, one officer did not show up.
Additionally, a significant number of criminal gangs succumb to injuries. Other criminals experienced fatal harm. There no further details on the mission from the MSS spokesperson. This incident happened a week after another senior Kenyan police got shot in the head. The shooting on the head happens in the same area the ambush on Tuesday took place.
Not a coincidence!
The officer still remains in a critical medical condition in the hospital. Still yet, on February 23, Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai got shot dead. This incident happened in the same area as the other two mentioned cases. The Kenyan team in Haiti vows to continue fighting the gangs.
To help in combating such gangs in Haiti, Kenya deployed at least 800 police officers. For the gang issues to be resolved, 2500 personnel are required. Other officers expected to help combat the gang issue come from Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Guatemala, Benin, and Chad.
When will Haiti be free?
Over the recent past, Haiti has been overwhelmed with cases of gangs. Unfortunately, the gangs in Haiti control 85 percent of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The struggle for stability in Haiti still continues despite prolonged foreign interventions. The violence in this country has made over a million Haitians be displaced from their homes.
