How to file KRA Returns

Filing your Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) tax returns is a crucial responsibility for every taxpayer in Kenya. Timely and accurate filing ensures compliance with tax regulations and helps avoid potential penalties. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of filing your KRA returns online using the iTax portal, including steps for filing nil returns and using your mobile phone.

Understanding the iTax Portal to File KRA Returns

The iTax portal is KRA’s online platform that facilitates tax-related services, including PIN registration, filing returns, and status inquiries. Accessing the iTax portal is the first step in filing your returns.

Prerequisites for Filing KRA Returns

Before you begin, ensure you have the following:

  • KRA PIN: Your unique Personal Identification Number issued by KRA.
  • iTax Password: The password associated with your iTax account.
  • P9 Form: For employed individuals, this form details your annual earnings and deductions.

Steps to File KRA Returns Online

For individuals with employment income only:

Log into iTax Portal;

  • Visit the iTax portal.
  • Enter your KRA PIN and click ‘Continue’.
  • Input your password and solve the security question, then click ‘Log in’.

Access the Filing Section;

  • Navigate to the ‘Returns’ menu and select ‘File Return’.
  • Choose ‘Income Tax – Resident Individual’ as the tax obligation.
  • Download the Pre-Populated Form:
  • Click on the provided link to download the Income Tax Return form.
  • Open the form using a compatible spreadsheet application.

Fill in the Return Form;

  • Enter your personal details and select the return period (e.g., for 2022, use ’01/01/2022′ to ’31/12/2022′).
  • Input employment income details as per your P9 form.
  • Declare any other income sources if applicable.
  • Ensure all mandatory fields are completed.

Upload and Submit the Return;

  • Generate a zipped file of the completed form.
  • Return to the iTax portal, select ‘Returns’ > ‘File Return’.
  • Upload the zipped file and submit.
  • Download the acknowledgment receipt for your records.

If you had no income in the preceding year, you are required to file nil returns:

  • Download the acknowledgment receipt.
