What a competitive match for Kenya at home. Despite the huge turnout and massive support Kenya lost 1-2 to Gabon. Since September 12, 2023, when Harambee Stars defeated Rwanda 2-1 in a 2022 world cup, no major fixtures have occurred. In recent years, Kenya had to borrow CAF-approved stadiums from Uganda, Malawi, and South Africa.
Gabon Leads in the First Half!
For the first minutes of the game, Gabon played an aggressive game. With the pressure, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the first goal for Gabon. A beautifully executed cross from Alex Moucke to u-Moussounda destroyed the Kenyan defense. This led to the leading goal by Aubameyang.
The high spirits from the Kenyan fanbase originated from the thoughts of an equalizer from Olunga. The exciting goal struck by Michael Olunga got ruled offside at the 18th minute. The excitement became just an illusion. Moments later, Richard Odada gave away a golden chance to put the ball to the back of the net.
Few moments before the halftime break, Olunga, the Harambee star captain, narrowly scored an equalizer. However, in the early stages of the second half, Gabon proved to be a stronger team. With great persistence and resilience, Gabon managed to score in the 50th minute. The goal happened after Gabon got awarded a penalty.
The awarded penalty came after Kenyan defender Erick Ouma created a handball inside the penalty box. Aubameyang sent the goalkeeper, Ian Otieno, the wrong way. This made the fixture 2-0.
Harambee stars halfs the Lead
Unexpectedly, a powerful shot from Mario Lemina, a Gabon player, got split by the Kenyan goalkeeper. Ian Otieno prevented further damage from the visitors. However, a glimmer of hope in the stadium emerged in the 61st minute. Michael Olunga, the Harambee Stars captain, tapped in. Thanks to the dazzling run by Erick Ouma down the left flank and a pinpoint cross that led to the goal.
Vistors takes three Points
Even with the setback of a lack of a proper stadium, Harambee stars exhibited promising moments. Harambee stars showed elite defensive discipline and excellent finishing. This gives the team hope in bringing the change in the next fixtures in the World Cup qualifiers.
