Kenya Airports Authority is set to engage a balance sheet to administer to the new airport project. This is after the failure of the infamous Adani deal. The plan at the cabinet level involved the heads of different agencies.
Who is leading the new airport project?
The following are the top most government individuals who lead in planning and implementation of the new airport project:
- Transport PS Mohamed Dagher,
- Tourism CS Rebecca Mlano,
- Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen
- Transport CS Davis Chirchir
- Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja
According to the cabinet’s proposal, the new airport shall not happen at the cost of the government’s investment. The CS at the JKIA Customer Service Charter said that plan shall be submitted to the cabinet. A framework on leveraging then shall be laid.
KAA’s Past Struggles
KAA being a body that oversees airports is yet to recover previous losses. This is following the termination of the 2017 JKIA Greenfield Terminal project. Also, the Greenfield project remained in debt of beyond Sh4 billion.
However, KAA takes pride in owning up to Sh1 trillion in assets. Accompanied by the interior CS counterpart Murkomen, PS Transport Dagher, and the fore-mentioned officials. Additionally, they claimed that the government is ready to approve the construction of the new airport.
This is what Mr. Davis Chirchir said: “The airport should be able to leverage its balance sheet to develop a new airport so that it is not competing with other social infrastructure that we need to do education and health and food security.”
KAA’s Responsibility
KAA is a state agency that ensures the service charter is signed with the rest of the departments and agencies. The charter involves in roping in the following capacities:
- Directorate of immigration services
- Customs
- Kenya Revenue Authority
- Kenya Airports Police Unit
CS Miano assures the public that the charter shall play a significant role in receiving 5 million visitors by 2027.
